Joyce was born the second child of Maurice and Freda (Swenson) Basinger on February 22, 1934 in Meade, Kansas. After her father’s death the family moved to Sharon, Kansas, where Joyce graduated Sharon High School. During this time, she helped her mom in a creamery station and became the youngest licensed cream tester in Kansas. During school, she was very active in the band. She met and married her high school sweetheart, Bob McDaniel on May 12, 1951 in Sharon, Kansas. To this union they had three sons, Mark, Marshall, and Mike.

Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. While Bob was overseas, Joyce stayed with her mom. After Bob’s discharge in 1952, they moved to Alva, Oklahoma. In November of 1954 they bought their first locker and meat processing plant in Shattuck, Oklahoma. Which they operated for 13 years. During this time the also ran a Dairy Kream for 6 months with the help of their sons. They sold both businesses in the fall of 1967. On a business trip in 1967, looking for land, Bob bought the Caney Food Bank. He went back home, and the family packed up and moved to Caney, Kansas. They moved in the old Dales Motel until they purchased their first home north of town. In 1972 they purchased their current home on 9th street. They sold the Food Bank in 1980 and planned to retire and travel, but in 1981, they opened a gift shop in downtown Caney and moved that store to the highway 75 location in 1983. They bought the Caney Floral business and added it to the gift shop. Then they moved the store to its final location on 3rd street and ran it until Joyce closed the store in December of 2014.

Joyce loved to read and was a big supporter of the library. She along with several other women from the Can Kan Dream Builders raised money to build the new library. Joyce held the office of Vice President until she retired from the group. Joyce and Bob were also big supporters of the FFA and the After Prom Party.
