Fern Horst

Fern Horst, 84, of Caney, Kansas ‘made the landing in Heaven', Sunday, August 16, 2015, from the Honey Grove, Texas,
Nursing Center, after a brief struggle with cancer.
Willow Fern Deal was born May 26, 1931, in Rocky Comfort, Missouri, the second of four children born to Robert Shelly Deal and Zelma Ruth [[]Cox] Deal. She grew up in rural Havana and rural Caney area, attending schools there. On July 23, 1953, at Bentonville, Ark, she married Buddy Eldon Horst. To this union was born three children, Elane, Mitchal, and Michelle. She received training as a nurses aid and was employed for many years at the Caney Hospital and at the Caney Nursing Center.
Fern enjoyed gospel music, reading, as well as watching, feeding and listening to song birds. She loved to crochet and then share her creations with family and friends. She will be greatly missed and remembered as a hard worker, wonderful neighbor and a great friend.
Blessed by her memory are her surviving loved ones: son Mitch Horst, formerly of Caney, now residing in Honey Grove, Texas, daughter Michelle Owen and husband Raymond, also of Honey Grove, daughter Dana Metler of New Mexico, and daughter Brenda Mustain of Missouri; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brother David Deal and wife Connie of rural Caney, brother Richard Deal of KCKS, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, husband Buddy, infant daughter, Elane, and a sister Naomi Lumley.
Graveside Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00pm, Friday, August 21st, 2015, at Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney. Arrangements are under the direction of Potts Chapel Funeral Home in Caney.
Friends may sign the guest register at Potts Chapel in Caney from 8:00am to 5:00pm daily. Online condolences may be shared at www.pottsfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial donations be made to the Can-Kan Dream Builders Library Fund in memory of Fern Horst. Donations can be left with the Potts Chapel in Caney.
