Dolly Hockett

Dolly Mae Hockett, age 94, went to be with her Jesus on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, in Dewey, OK.  Dolly was born on June 1, 1926, on a farm near Satanta, KS, to Walter and Lora (Alexander) Taton.  She was the third of six children.  Her childhood was spent in western Kansas which is where she met her husband, Ervin (Turk) Hockett.  They were married on her Mama’s front porch on October 11, 1942.  Dolly and Turk later settled in Caney, KS, in 1956.

Dolly was a devoted mother to her children: Gene, Jim, Jerry, Mary Agnes, Jack, Joyce, John, Judy and Joe.  These are her biological children, but there are many more that would claim to have been on the receiving end of the of her motherly care and affection.  Dolly was always willing to give a helping hand or a piece of incredible advice to anyone in need.  She seemed to have experienced everything and always knew how to help you through your struggle.

Dolly was an incredibly hard worker.  She and Turk ran several stations while raising their children and it wasn’t unusual to see her pumping gas for a customer or fixing a tire.  When they opened Hockett Salvage, they closed the station and Dolly went to work at Kopco.  She was a faithful employee as a mail room supervisor and when she “retired”, she had worked for Kopco for 36 years.

Dolly was a light in our world.  She had experience great loss during her life, but she set a Godly example of how to handle adversity.  She always had a kind or encouraging word and would help in any way she could.   Her home was always open to those in need.

Dolly was an active member of the Caney Church of the Nazarene where, over the years she served in many different positions including Sunday school teacher, church secretary, church treasurer, song leader and steward.  She loved providing the cookies and kool-aid for VBS and it was always important to her to give each child a Christmas Treat bag.   Dolly was also a member of the Caney Saddle Club since its inception.  She enjoyed helping with the trail ride and participating in the club’s activities.  In addition, she was also member of the SEK Blue-Star Mothers.

Dolly is survived by her sister, Daisy Whithorn; her son Jack Hockett;  her daughter Joyce Anderson and husband Jerry; her daughter Judy Bennett and husband Gary.  She is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and 42 great-great grandchildren.   She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 4 siblings, 6 children, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

She will be missed by so many, but the reunion in Heaven was surely something to behold.

The family will be receiving friends at Potts Chapel in Caney on Friday, December 18, from 5-7 pm.  Services will be held at the Caney Hope Church on Saturday, December 19 at 2 pm with a graveside service at Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney immediately following.  Masks will be required.
