Charles "Sonny" Eugene Artherton age 91 of Caney, Kansas passed away at home, comfortably on Sunday, December 19th 2021. Sonny was born May 7th, 1930 in Peru, Kansas. In the fall of 1940 he moved from Peru to Tyro, Kansas where he attended the State Line School. In 1942 he moved to Caney, where he continued his education and graduated from Caney High School in 1948. He also enjoyed playing football and would often reminisce about this with family.
After high school he started working for Cities Service. He worked here for about a year and a half and then was drafted into the United States Army, he completed his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served 21 months and was later honorably discharged as a First Sergeant. He served in the Korean War, upon discharge he earned a Korean service medal with three bronze service stars, combat infantry badge, national defense service medal, good conduct medal and one overseas bar.
He returned to Caney, KS and made this his home. He continued to work for Cities Service that later became Williams Brothers Pipeline and retired after 35 years of service, where he had several different job titles. He was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 647. He was a proud, registered Democrat.
On November 15th, 1958 he married the love of his life, Catherine Marie Call, who preceded him in death on November 11th, 1975. They made their home in Caney, KS with his four step-children, who he raised and loved as his own. He enjoyed camping, woodworking, bird watching, and spending time with his family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  He enjoyed watching any and all sports, participating in and often winning "I Whipped Walls" and other sports contests.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Leo Artherton and Leona Wadsworth. His wife Catherine Artherton. Brothers Robert "Buddy" Artherton, Gary Artherton, and a sister as a young child, Carol Artherton. Step-son, Ray Call of Collinsville, OK.
Those left to cherish his memory are his brother Richard (Delores) Artherton, of Wyandotte, OK. Step-daughters Fran (Jack) Falder of Noel, MO, Lana (Bill) Osborn of Collinsville, OK, and Sherrill Dean of Caney, KS. Grand-Children Cathy (Jerry) Wesh of Claremore, OK, Robin (Kelly) Falder of Stillwater, OK, Lori Garcia of Tulsa, OK, Jeff (Diann) Call of Sand Springs, OK, Jimmy Call, FL, Katie (Rick) Varner of Skiatook, OK, Rae Lee (Ron) Sutton of Owasso, OK, Cody Call, Joni (Stephen) Wallace of Oologah, OK, Mike Osborn of Tulsa, OK, Lana Dean of Coffeyville, KS, Chris Dean of Caney, KS, and Lewis (Mandie) Dean of Caney, KS. Great-Grandchildren Andrea (Justin) Dryden, Bryce (Brandi Campbell) Brown, Calyn (Jake) Brown, Lance VanManen, Ethan Dean, Josie Dean, Colton Dean, Jeremy (Robyn) Welsh, Jared (Leesa) Welsh, Amanda (Harley Swan) Welsh, Emily Tully, Cassie Falder, Jeremy and Jacob Garcia, Julie (Brandon) Longorie, Joanna (Kyle) Roach, Elizabeth (Brandon) Downing, Andrea (Charles) Adams, Miranda (Ben) Duncan, Anjolina and Kathryn Call, Kaylee Call, Emily Varner, Brigett Varner, Breyden Varner, Aspyn and Shayd Sutton, Ashtyn (Davie) Henry, Haley (Chris) Young, Tyler Osborn, and many many great grandchildren. Nieces Brenda Jones, Teresa Mantooth, Sherry Wealthall, Kim Chesser, Tani White, Michelle Hinton, and Renee Hunter and many great nieces and nephews.
Charles was a giving man and in honor of his memory the family has requested any donations in his name be made to the Wounded Warriors or St. Judes Children's Research.
Celebration of life services will be Thursday, December 23, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Pott's Chapel in Caney, KS. Burial will follow at Peru City Cemetery, Peru, KS. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pott's Chapel in Caney, KS. Family will receive friends at that time.
