Daniel Bruce Vernon peacefully passed, surrounded by his loved ones, on December 5th, 2018. He lived a fulfilled life of love and music. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil “Buddy” Vernon, and his step father, Michael Foley. Surviving loved ones include wife, Edie Vernon of Caney, KS; mother, Nancy Foley of LaQuinta CA, sister, Annette and Larry Johnson of LaQuinta, CA; and six children.
Dan married Rosemarie Otte (Jay) in 1980 and had five children: Adrienne and Travis Leach of Chanute, KS, Jennifer and Chis Sizemore of Wichita, KS, Michael Vernon and fiancé Chrissy Henley of Tulsa, OK, Paul Vernon and fiancé Kate Terhune of Iola, KS, and Phillip and Sydney Vernon of Joplin, MO. This marriage ended in divorce in 1995.
Marriage to Edie Vernon in 2003 resulted in the addition of a step daughter, Kaye Brownlee – France and Justin France of Tulsa, OK.
“Grandpa Dan” was adored by all of his 10 grandchildren. He instilled the importance of having Jesus in their hearts and supported multiple church camp outings, bible studies, and Christian movie nights. Some of the children have already begun their musical journeys, much to their grandfather’s delight. He really loved being “Grandpa” and could be easily convinced to purchase loud and noisy gifts for them to keep at their parents homes.
Dan was a graduate of Wichita Southeast High School, and a proud WSU Alumni of the class of 1980 with his degree in Music Education. Dan was a member of Kappa Kappi PSI and worked on the Band Staff while attending WSU. He could be found at any marching band event with trumpet in hand. Dan continued to be an avid Chiefs fan and an Alabama football fanatic throughout his life, recent seasons had been much more celebrated than those in past decades and Dan wore his Alabama hats proudly. “Roll Tide!”
Mr. Vernon was “Legend” amongst his massive student following that included the towns of Andale, Greensburg, Humboldt, West Elk, Thayer, Tescott, Bennington, and his town of retirement, Caney, KS. Dan actively directed and pushed his students from 1980 up until 2007 when he retired. Daily he was recognizable by former students and he enjoyed hearing successes from their lives.
The City of Caney became his hometown. Dan served on the City Council and was frequently known to have pleasant conversations while handling his day to day errands.
Dan volunteered his musical and singing talents through his local community and played often up until his passing.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 at the First Southern Baptist Church at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers or plants, donations can be made to First Southern Baptist Church of Coffeyville, KS.

Dan was a band-mate, friend and Kappa Kappa Psi honorary fraternity brother during our great college years at Wichita State University. In fact, he was my pledge "dad" that first semester of my college career. He was a delightful friend to have all those years ago, and I cherish our band, fraternity and "Risk" board game memories of those days gone by. I was honored to be Best Man at his and Rosemarie's wedding, and always found that, in our few meetings over the years since, the smiles and laughs came easily, like it had been no time lost between us at all. I am saddened with the loss of Dan, but in reading his wonderful story here, I'm saddened even more for his family, friends, students and his life's path-mates in the years since our great times shared long ago. The race is finished, Dan, well run over a path well traveled, touching and guiding many other lives along the way. Bless you and keep you and all those that will miss you so.

Sorry to here about Dan. I enjoyed my years teaching with Dan in Humboldt. He was a lot of fun to hang with especially when he helped me coach Middle School Basketball.
