John Hubert (Jack) Horton was born November 6, 1955 in Independence, KS, the son of Hubert Jones and Betty Lou (Campbell) Horton. Jack attended church at Wayside Christian Church during his formative years and later the Tyro Christian Church. Jack attended school in Wayside and Havana,KS, until the 8th grade when Wayside consolidated with the Caney school district. He graduated from high school there in 1973. Jack then attended Coffeyville Community College on a football scholarship in the fall of 1973 before transferring to Kansas State University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in 1977. Upon graduation Jack returned home to work for the family business, Horton Oil Company. After the death of his father in October of 1978, Jack and brother-in-law Phil McKee formed the partnership Horton-Mckee Oil. Also at this time, along with Kurt Finney and Fred Jones, Jack was an owner in Jayhawk Drilling Company. He also had partnerships with Southwinds Energy and NTR Metals of Dallas, TX. From 1996 to 2012, Jack resided in Sedan, KS where he managed Red Buffalo ranch, the property of his cousin, Bill Kurtis, west of Sedan. After this time and until his passing, Jack maintained Horton Oil Company along with his son in Wayside, KS and the surrounding area.
He was united in marriage with Patricia Estes on May 31, 1980. Together they had 3 children. Jack lived his life with them in mind. At all times, Jack put the interests of others above his. His love of Christ made him a living example of Matthew 22:37-39. He loved cooking for his family and just being with them and knowing that they were ok. It was the thrill of his life to welcome a grandson in September of last year. Jack worked hard his whole life but knew that the simple things were the important things.
Jack is survived by his wife Patty Horton of the home, one son John Horton of Wayside, KS and two daughters Jacqueline Miller and husband Mike of Tulsa, OK. Lindsay Cacozza and husband Joseph of Dallas, TX. Three sisters; Susan Veith and husband Lee of Independence, KS, Kathy Schiefelbein and husband John of Ely, MN, Ruth McKee and husband Phil of Wayside, KS. One grandson; Joey Cacozza of Dallas, TX.
