After 12 years of beating down cancer, Annette (Powell) McMillin, 64, died in her Independence home last week.
She was born in 1952 to Wayne and Barbara Powell of Sedan, where she graduated high school in 1970, later attending Independence Community College then graduating from Kansas State University.
Annette married David McMillin in 1974 and began her teaching career at Independence High School shortly thereafter. She taught PE and coached as head women’s basketball and volleyball coach and later briefly as assistant basketball coach. After taking a hiatus to raise her two children, she returned to teaching 5th grade PE at Washington Elementary for many years until her retirement due to health concerns.
Following her stint in high school athletics, Annette became very involved in youth sports programs, coaching recreational softball and basketball. She organized a dual-class girls traveling basketball team in 1993, leading this group of girls during the summers and culminating her coaching career by returning to high school athletics as their freshman coach from 1997-1999.
Annette had many outdoor hobbies: camping, boating, gardening and relaxing on the patio. She preferred to pull her camper to Colorado or Big Hill Lake during warmer weather to enjoy cold drinks with friends. She also had a love affair with flamingos and the beach; however, in the latter years of her life, she traded campers and beach vacations for a lake house at Table Rock Lake. The most enjoyable times of her life were spent there sitting peacefully on the dock, good glass of wine in hand, saying, “Don’t get no better than this.”
Her parents Wayne and Barbara Powell, as well as her older siblings, Russell Powell and Paula Boulanger, predeceased her. She is survived by her siblings Larry Powell and Kimberly Schmidt; her doting husband David; her two children Scott McMillin and Megan Walker; her three grandchildren that she dearly loved spending time with, Andersen and Waylon McMillin and Marin Walker; and her sidekick dog Bella, whom no one else really likes.
Memorial services will be held this Saturday, September 30 at 11:00AM at the Nazarene Church in Independence. Although Annette enjoyed caring for her potted plants and flowers, her husband does not. So in lieu of an abundance of flowers that family members will likely neglect, Annette would like donations to be made to the Annette McMillin Memorial Scholarship Fund to aid college athletes. Donations can be made at the service, mailing checks to First Oak Bank of Independence, or through PayPal at Online condolences can be made to the family by visiting She also suggested memorializing her life by planting trees and flowers, or taking family vacations to the beach or lake in her honor, where she has requested her ashes be spread.

Annette was a wonderful friend through high school and college. We were able to reconnect some these past 10 years. I very much enjoyed our conversations around family and reminiscing about people and growing up in Sedan. She died too early and too young. My heart goes out to you David and to her family.

    Dear David, and family,
Tonight I have truly enjoyed reading Annette's obituary. She accomplished so many things always relating to other people. And that's how I remember her. She was young in 1970-1974 when I lived in Indy and when you and Annette began dating. Some were amazing adventures and others just honest heart felt conversations. She will always be remembered as a genuine, funny, young woman . I think that's how she'll remain because thinking about those days makes me smile! God Bless you and your family in the days ahead.

Sending prayers for the family. Annette was my volleyball coach 1979-81 and my cheerleading sponser in 81-82. I was also her gym assistant. She taught me a lot of life lessons while she was my coach. My senior year she told us not to play coed slow pitch during volleyball season and I played anyway and dislocated my thumb and I was her starting setter and after lecturing me she taped my thumb for every practice and game. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. My daughter is getting married on the day of her funeral and so sorry I will miss it.
