I served in the Army.

J. Ray Sumner went home to be with the Lord on April 29, 2017. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 2:00pm at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 3rd, 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm with family greeting friends 5:00 – 8:00 pm.
J. Ray Sumner was born on July 17, 1931 in Delaware County, Oklahoma. He was the son of George W. and Nancy Jane (Alexander) Sumner. Ray was drafted in 1952 completing boot camp in Ft. Bliss and proudly served his country in Korea. He completed his tour in 1954. Ray loved the lord and served him in all of his days. He touched many lives in his 85 years. He received his degree to be a Baptist Minister in 1975 from the Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. From that day on he served as a minister in many locations. Serving the lord was a passion that was dear to his heart. He studied for many years receiving his Masters of Theology, Doctor of Letter, and his Doctor of Divinity degree by 1980. He had also served as a Missionary in the Ukraine.
His passion in life was to preach the word of God and to sing and let people hear his voice. He performed at many of the retirement homes in the area. He left behind his wife of 35 years that loved him with all her heart, Charlotte Sumner.
Ray was the baby of twelve brothers and sisters; Leona Mae Parker, Victoria Viloa War, Harvey Earl Sumner, Millard Felix Sumner, Georgia Fern Tanner, Milford Harlen Sumner, Loretta Elva Tucker, Martha Louisa Gorman, Winnie Pauline Hopkins, Mary Elizabeth Hopkins, and Elmer Ray Sumner.
Ray leaves behind his wife and four children; Michael Ray Sumner (Yvette), Susan K. Bradford (Jeff), Kenneth Winger (Claudia) and Sherrie Oneil (Rick), eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
